Guruvayoor Krishna Temple

Guruvayoor is one of the most important pilgrimage centers of South India. The temple dedicated Lord Krishna is main attraction of Guruvayoor. The temple town is located at the distance of 29 Km from Thrissur towards north-west. Guruvayoor Krishna Temple is fourth biggest temple of India in terms of number of devotees visited daily.

Guruvayoor Krishna TempleAccording to legends, the temple was created by Guru, the preceptor of the Gods, and Vayu, the wind god. The main entrance of Guruvayoor Krishna temple is the Eastern Nada. Within the Chuttambalam (outer enclosure) is the tall 33.5 meters high gold plated Dwajasthambam (flag-post). There is also a 7 meters high Dipastambham (pillar of lamps) whose thirteen circular receptacles provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when lit. The square Sreekovil is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses the main deity.

The temple is considered as Bhoo Vaikuntam (means the holy abode of Lord Vishnu on the earth). It is believed that the idol of Lord Krishna at Guruvayoor is very old and there are no historical records. According to the legend, the idol of Lord Krsihna is 5000 year old. The idol of Lord Krishna is in enchanting form. The idol has four lustrous arms. The upper left hand is holding the conch Panchajanya, the right hand is holding Sudarshana Chakra, the lower left hand with gada and the lower right hand with Padma (Lotus). The lord is decorated with the Tulasi garland.

The daily rituals are performed as per the customs set by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya and later written formally in the Tantric method by Chennas Narayanan Namboodiri. The Chennas Namboodiris are the hereditary Tantris of the Guruvayoor Krishna Temple. The Tantri is available full time to make sure that the rituals are performed and customs are strictly followed without any mistakes.

The Vedic traditions are followed at this temple with complete perfection as well as sincerity is a feature of Guruvayoor Krishna Temple. You should observe here that, even though the fact that the temple is believed to be one of the sacred place for Vaishnavites, the Guruvayoor Temple is absolutely not one of the 108 Diyva desam of Vishnu.

The Krishna temple of Guruvayoor also houses images of Lord Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedattu Kavil Bhagavathy.

Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.
