Legend about Varkala:

As per the legend, Lord Brahma ordered Pandyan King to construct a temple at this place to release him of his sins. It is also believed that a group of people, who has made sins during their lifetime approached Narada, son of Lord Brahma and told him that they have done sins in their lifetime and they requested Narada to tell them how they can get rid of their sins, Narada then threw his valkalam (a loin cloth made from the bark of a tree) and it landed at this picturesque place and therefore, the place was named as Varkala. Narada advised the people to pray to become free from their sins at Papanasam, which literally means becoming free from Papa (sins).

Sections of Varkala Beach (Papanasam Beach) are used by Indians to drop the ashes of their cremated dead family members into the sea. People think that the strong sacred components of the water will extend to the souls of their most recently expired. In spite of dropping ashes, the Varkala Beach is well-liked by swimmers both locals as well as foreign tourists.


Best Time to visit: Varkala Beach has a moderate climate, with heavy rains during June to August due to the southwest monsoon. Therefore, September to May is the best time to visit Varkala Beach.
