Kannur Tourism


Kannur district is one of the important districts of Kerala especially for tourism because the potential of tourism in Kannur district is high. The St. Angelos Fort in the Kannur Cantonment, which was built in the year 1505, is a representation of Portuguese architecture and draws plenty of visitors.

Kannur district derived its name from the location of its headquarters at Kannur town. The old name of Kannur was Cannanore (anglicized form). It is believed that Kannur have assumed its name from the combination of two Malayalam words, Kannan (Lord Krishna) and Ur (place) making it the place of Lord Krishna.

Kannur district is spread to an extent of 2997 square kilometers. Kannur District is bounded by Kasaragod District towards north, Kozhikode District and Wayanad District towards south, Western Ghats towards east and Arabian Sea towards west.

The important tourism places of Kannur include the Thalassery Fort, Kannur beach and Ezhimala are known for scenic beauty. Places of historic importance, like the house of Gulldert and the mosque at Madayi built in the year 1124, using marble brought from Mecca attract many tourists. The Kannur district is also cradle of various a colorful folk art forms like Theyyam

Fort St. Angelos

Fort St. Angelos

Fort St. Angelos is located in the west of Kannur town. This monument was built by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida in the year 1505. This Fort St. Angelos is in a fairly good state of protection. The fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Thalassery Fort After shifting the commercial capital to Thalassery from Kozhikkode, the British built the Thalassery Fort on a small hill called Tiruvellapadkunnu in the year 1700. The fort is square structure built of laterite and is well-known for its massive ventilated walls as well as strong flanking bastions.


Muzhappilangad Beach

Muzhappilangad Beach is the only Drive-In Beach of Asia and it is located between parallel to National Highway NH-17 between Thalassery and Kannur at a distance of 16 Km from Kannur. The main attraction of this Muzhappilangad beach is a beach festival is celebrated in the month of April.


Payyambalam Beach

Payyambalam Beach is the beautiful and largest beach located in Kannur district of Kerala. The main attraction of this beach is a sculpture of Mother and Child crafted by Kanayi Kunhiraman. Payyambalam Beach is an ideal place to spend evenings, irrespective of seasons.


Ezhimala

Ezhimala

Ezhimala is located at a distance of 36 Km north of Kannur. Ezhimala, one of ancient historical site is the capital of the Mooshika Kings. Ezhimala is an eye-catching, isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory. It is also believed that Lord Buddha had visited Ezhimala.


Malayalakalagramam

Malayalakalagramam also known as MAKAM is located at a distance of 31 Km from Kannur. It is a centre for art and ideas which aims at providing children and youngsters a Kalari (stage) to practice and perform all types of fine arts. Yoga and Sanskrit are also taught here.


Pazhassi Dam

Pazhassi Dam is located at a distance of 46 Km from Kannur. Pazhassi Dam is a perfect retreat for tourists; the Pazhassi Dam is well-known for its picturesque magnificence. The DTPC provides enjoyable boating services at the dam. Accommodation is available at the Project Inspection Bungalow.


Pythal Mala

Pythal Mala is a charming hill station is located at a distance of 65 Km from Kannur town. Pythal Mala is rich in flora and fauna. It is a 6 km trek to the top of the hills. It is situated 4,500 feets above sea level near the Kerala - Karnataka border.


Gundert Bungalow

Gundert Bungalow

Gundert Bungalow is located at a distance of 22 Km from Kannur towards north. It is named after Dr. Herman Gundert, the revered German missionary, scholar and lexicographer because he lived in this bungalow for 20 years from 1839.


Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu

Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu

Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is located at a distance of 16 Km from Kannur Town and 2 Km from National Highway (NH) 17, en route from Kannur to Taliparamba. The snake park is home for variety of snakes and other small animals, including the Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra, Russell's viper, Krait and various pit vipers.


Moppila Bay

Moppila Bay

Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbor, located near Fort St. Angelos. A sea wall projecting from the fort divides the rough sea and inland water. The Moppila bay was well-known during the Kolathiris' administration as a commercial harbor that connected Kolathunadu with Lakshadweep and foreign countries.


How to reach Kannur:

Airport: The district is set to have a new international airport at Mattannur. Kannur International Airport will be the fourth International Airport in Kerala. The nearest airport is located in Kozhikode (93 Km).

Railway Stations: Kannur is an important railhead of the Southern Railways.

Road: Kannur is well connected with road network. An excellent road transport system connects Kannur to all the major towns and cities of South India. West Coast road from Mahe to Talapady is part of the National Highway NH-17. Kannur - Mattannur - Iritty Road, Pappinisseri - Pilathara Road, Taliparambu - Sreekandapuram Road, Payyannur - Peringome (Kozhichal) Road, Thalassery -Kodagu road and the Thalassery - Mysore road are the other important roads.
