Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, Kerala


Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple is one of the important Hindu pilgrimages located in Western Ghats mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District of Kerala state. It is estimated that around 5 crore devotees visit Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple every year.

Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, KeralaThe Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple is situated in the beautiful locality surrounded by the hills and dense forest. The temple is situated amid 18 hills at an altitude of 468 meters above sea level. Lord Ayyappa meditated at this place after killing the dominant demoness Mahishi.

There could be no proper proof regarding when did the pilgrimage to Sabarimala started was. The Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple was mostly mot accessed for approximately three centuries. One of the kings in the later generation founded the customary paths to go to Sabarimala Temple. The King and some followers, with the descendants of Vavar family. They refreshed their resources at a place called Erumely and this marked the start of popular Petta Thullal at Erumely. They laid down their arms in the location at present referred to as Saramkuthy. Those who're on their first visit to the holy Sabarimala thrust arrows at this place.

The Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple is open for worship only during some particular days like days of Mandalapooja that is approximately between 15-Nov and 26-Dec, Makaravilakku or Makara Sankranti (14-Jan) and Vishu (14-Apr), and the first six days of each Malayalam month. Unlike certain Hindu temples in Kerala, Sabarimala Ayyappa temple has no restrictions of caste or creed. Men of all age group are allowed inside the temple. Since Lord Ayyappa is Brahmachari, women between the age group of 10 and 50 strictly not allowed inside the temple (i.e. women in the menstrual age group)


The Pilgrimage to Sabarimala:

The devotees should follow 41 days of strict Vratham before starting their pilgrimage to Sabarimala. This starts with wearing a special mala made by rudraksha and Tulasi beads. The devotee should be very strict in following the rules. He is supposed to wear plain Blue or Black or Saffron colored dress. He should lead a bachelor life even though he is married. He is not suppose to eat Non-Veg food, drink Alcohol, should not smoke, should not cut his hair or shave his beard. He should not wear the footwear. He should bath twice a day and visit the local temples regularly. He should address everyone using the word swamy.

After following strict 41 day Vratham, a devotee can start his journey to Sabarimala. Devotees usually go by walk in traditional mountainous forest path (approximately 52 km) from Erumely, it is believed that even Lord Ayyappa himself used this path. The part starts from Erumely to Aludha river, then crosses the Aludha mountain to reach Karivilam thodu. Then comes the sacred Karimala after crossing from there to Cheriyanavattom, Pariyanavattom and finally reaching Pampa River.

However many people use motorable road which takes them till the Holy Pampa River by an alternate road. Thereafter, all the pilgrims have to follow a mountainous forest trekking path approximately nine kilometers up a steep hill (Neeli Mala) to Sabarimala.

Every year millions of people visit to Sabarimala irrespective of caste or creed and adorn themselves with garlands and irumudis, chants slogans on Lord Ayyappa, bathe in holy river Pampa, climb up the eighteen steps and get the grace of Lord Ayyappa.

On Makara Sankranti day, a Jewel Casket is carried on head from the ancestral residence of the royal family of Panthalam to the Shrine. A Garuda, the divine kite, follows this ornaments carrying procession, hovering about in the sky. After these ornaments are worn on the Lord Ayyappa, the bird circles the temple in the sky three times and disappears.


How to get there:

The main routes to Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple are,

Kottayam to Pampa (via) Erumeli, from Pampa to Sabarimala (by foot) - 136 km Kottayam to Pampa (via) Manimala, from Manimala to Sabarimala by foot - 116 km
Erumeli to Sabarimala (via) Kalaketty, Azhutha, Inchippara, Karimala, Pampa - 45 km From Pampa to Sabarimala by walk.

Vandiperiyar to Mount Estate by vehicle, from Mount Estate to Sabarimala by walk.

Vandiperiyar to Kozhikkanam, from Kozhikkanam to Sabarimala (descent) - 15 km Kozhikkanam to Uppupura -10 km. Uppupura to Sabarimala - 3.5 km (Vehicles can be utilized for travel till Uppupura).

Vehicles cannot proceed further beyond Pampa which is located in the Pampa river valley; the final five kilometers are best covered by trekking, but for the aged and handicapped, porters and chairs are available.


Nearest Railway Station: The Nearest railhead is at Chengannur, which is located at a distance of about 93 km from Pamba. Chengannur is located in the main rail route between Trivandrum and Kottayam and is connected by rail to all other railway stations in India.
