Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar lake - an artificial lake, at Thekkady. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a real gift of the nature to the humans.
The high ranges of the Western Ghats in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary are dressed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests as well as savannah grass lands.
The Periyar Widlife sanctuary covers an area of about 777 sq km, of which 360 sq km is thick evergreen forest; the Periyar Wiildlife Sanctuary was announced as a Tiger Reserve in the year 1978. Besides elephant rides, cruises on the lake as well as trekking for the ruined Mangaladevi temple - a wonderful ancient stone temple located in heart of Thekkady forest; this sanctuary provides the exclusive chance to observe as well as photograph wild elephants in close quarters.
The luxurious artificial lake formed by Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River enhances the charm of this park.
