Alappuzha Tourism
Alappuzha is one of the districts of Kerala widely known for Tourism. The Alappuzha district is also popular for the coir factories. The district was formed in the year 1957 as Alleppey district and it was renamed to Alappuzha district in the year 1990.
Alappuzha is derived from two words, Ala and Puzha. Ala literally means Sea and Puzha means River (the confluence of river and sea). The district is important Tourism centre. Alappuzha is strongly connected by waterways to different parts of Kerala, which includes the famous tourist destination, Kumarakom.
Alappuzha is the perfect destination for backwater tourism. The Kottayam town in Alappuzha district is popular for beautiful churches. The town of Aranmula is well-known for its famous Aranmula Snake Boat Race which is an annual event.
There are beautiful beaches, resorts, appealing amusement parks and exciting canoes in Alappuzha district. The antique palaces bearing the proof of a luxurious architecture and the museum with a variety of artifacts add to the greatness of the region. The town is popularly known as 'Venice of the East'.

Ambalapuzha Temple
The Ambalapuzha temple is located at a distance of 38 Km from Alappuzha. The temple is one of the popular temples of India and it is built in typical Kerala architecture style. The Palpayasam, sweet milk porridge is offered daily to the deity of the temple. Paintings of the Dasavatharam are displayed on the inner walls of the temple.

Arthunkal Church
Arthunkal Church is located at a distance of 22 km north of alappuzha near Sherthalai. The St. Andrews Church at this place was constructed by Portuguese missionaries. The annual feast of St. Sebastian is held here in the month of January.

Champakulam Church
Champakulam church is located at a distance of 15 Km from the town of Alappuzha. This church is one of the oldest churches of Kerala and it is dedicated to St. Mary. It is believed that this church is one of the seven churches established by St. Thomas. The annual feast is held on the 3rd Sunday of October.

Chavara Bhavan
Chavara Bhavan is located at a distance of 11 Km from Alappuzha town. The ancestral home of the blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara and now it is a famous pilgrim spot. Boating is the only means of transport to get there.

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple
Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple is one of the prominent temples of Kerala state. The temple is one of the five temples established by Parashurama. The important feature of the Temple is that the goddess appears as Maha Saraswathi in the morning, Maha Lakshmi at noon and Sri Durga or Bhadrakali in the evening.

Edathua Church
Edathua church is located at a distance of 28 Km from Alappuzha. The Edathua Church is dedicated to St. George. It is believed that offerings prayers at this Church help in healing all kinds of mental disorders and other ailments.

Krishnapuram Palace
Krishnapuram palace one of the major tourist attractions of Alappuzha district. The Krishnapuram Palace was constructed by Marthanda Varma in 18th century. The palace is located at a distance of 48 Km from Alappuzha on the way to Kollam. The palace is well known for its architecture.

Kuttanad
Kuttanad is located at a distance of 20 Km from Alappuzha. The Kuttanad is regarded as the 'Rice Bowl of Kerala'. The important fact of Kuttanad is that, it is the only region in the world where agricultural is done up to 2 meters below sea level. The boat trip to Changanacherry passes through this beautiful and fertile region.

Mullakkal Rajeswari Temple
Mullakkal Rajeswari temple is one of the important places of worship in Alappuzha district and it is dedicated to the Goddess Rajarajeswari. The main attraction of the temple is the celebration of 'Navarathri' festival twice a year. Another important festival of Mullakkal Rajeswari Temple is 'Thaipooyakavadi'.

Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal is located at a distance of 17 Km from Alappuzha and it is a small attractive island in the Vembanad Lake. Pathiramanal island is situated between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom. Hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world arrive to this island.

Karumadikuttan
Karumadikuttan is a small village located near Alappuzha. The place is known for the statue of Buddha (made in Black Granite). The idol dates back to 11th century.

Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple
Located at a distance of 32 Km from Alappuzha, Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple is world famous and very ancient pilgrimage centre of Kerala. The temple here is dedicated to Lord Nagaraja. The famous Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple is situated in a thick green forest grove and covers an area of about 16 acres.

Q S T and R Block Kayal
Q S T and R Block Kayal regions are well-known for farming over reclaimed land from the backwaters. The area is protected by dikes built all around and reminds visitors of the famous dikes of Netherlands. A cruise along the canals here is quite a memorable experience.

Mararikulam
Mararikulam is located at a distance of 15 Km from Alappuzha on the coast south of Alappuzha. It houses a attractive beach and also has an adjoining fishing village. One can enjoy here by the leisure time activities like Pool, tennis, water sports and Ayurvedic treatments.

Backwater Cruise
Backwater Cruise is another important tourist attraction at Alappuzha. You can view the beauty of the landscape, monuments, temples, churches and industries of Alappuzha by cruising through its rivers, canals and backwaters. The starting point is from Alleppey and the finishing point is at Jetty.

Boat Races
Alappuzha district is also regarded as the cradle of boat races. All the important boat races, namely the Nehru Trophy boat Race at Punnamada, the Payippad near Haripad, the Thiruvandoor, Neerettupuram, Karuvatta and Thaikkoottam boat races are held at different parts of the district during August-September.

How to reach Alappuzha:
Airport: Cochin International Airport which is 85 kilometres to the North is the nearest airport to the district. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport located 159 kilometres to the South is the other airport that links the district with other countries.
Railway Stations: The railway station is about 4 kilometres away from the center of the town. Alappuzha Railway Station is linked by rail to cities like Trivandrum, Cochin, Chennai, Bokaro and Mumbai.
Road: Alappuzha is also well connected by road .National Highway NH 47 passes through the city connecting the city to other major cities like Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kollam and Trivandrum.
Ferry Services: The ferry station and bus station are close to each other. The ferry boats from Alappuzha passes through scenic backwaters.
