Shakthan Thampuran Palace
Shakthan Thampuran Palace is located in Thrissur city and it is situated close to the famous Vadakkumnatha Temple. The palace is also known as Vadakkekara Palace. In 1795, the Shakthan Thampuran Palace was reconstructed by Ramavarma Thampuran and Sakthan Thampuran (Greatest ruler of the Cochin dynasty) in Kerala-Dutch style of architecture.
The building of Sakthan Thampuran Palace features a two-storied structure as well as a traditional Kerala style Nalukettu. Lofty roofs, extra thick walls, large rooms moreover flooring covered with finely smoothened Italian marbles are few of the structural highlights of this palace. You can also find the history gallery depicting a number of milestones of the Kochi dynasty. The Epigraphy Gallery displays the beginning and evolution of antique writings. The other galleries of interest in the Shakthan Thampuran Palace consist of, a Gallery for Household Utensils made from bronze as well as copper, utilized by the Kochi rulers; as well as a Megalithic Gallery displaying ruins of the great stone age.
The palace has a very old Sarpakaavu or Serpent Grove, and that is a spot for worshipping the serpents as per Hindu belief, plus was formerly commonly practiced in Kerala. You can find an archaeological garden located in the Northeastern part of this Shakthan Thampuran Palace, where you could notice collections from the Stone Age found from the outskirts of Thrissur.
