The Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one among few temples and that is held in respect by both Shaivaites as well as the Vaishnavaites. Vaikom's Shiva is lovingly named as Vaikkathappan. The Shiva Linga of this temple is assumed that should be belonging to the 'Treta yuga' and regarded as one of the ancient temples of Kerala where daily rituals and pooja has not been broken from the beginning.
Legend
As per the legend, Khara (demon) of Ramayana prayed for Lord Shiva at Chidambaram. Lord Shiva pleased by his prayers, appeared in front of him and gave three Shiva Lingas to Khara. He travelled holding one Shiva Linga in each hand and one in the mouth. On the way, he took rest at Vaikom, and placed a Shiva Linga on the ground, that Shiva Linga got fixed in that place. Afterward Khara installed the other two Shiva Lingas at Ettumanur as well as Kaduthuruthy. He entrusted the Shiva Linga at Vaikom to the in charge of Vyagrapadar, since the name Vaikom originated. Legend also says that Parashuram, the incarnation of Vishnu constructed this temple as well as created the worship protocol at this place.
The oval shaped sanctum of Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is roofed using a copper plated roof topped by a golden Kalasam (dome). The peak of wall belonging to the sanctum is almost a third of that of roof. The structure belongs to the 11th century, and then the wooden panels as well as the murals date back to 15th & 18th centuries. The Mukhamandapam in front of sanctum has Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. The wall of inner prakaram is lined with columns of lamps over a wooden framework. The flagpole rises to a height of 317 ft. The Uttupura or the dining hall is towards the northern side of sanctum. You can find a temple to Pananchikkal Bhagawati at outer Prakaram.
Festival at Vaikom
The Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is also well-known for the Vaikom Ashtami, considered one of the main festivals, that is held in November-December. The accurate date of this event is decided by the calendar of Malayalam.
