Krishnapuram Palace
Krishnapuram Palace is one of the important places of attractions located in Kayamkulam near Alappuzha. The palace was constructed in the 18th century by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Travancore Kingdom.
Krishnapuram Palace is one of the best examples of typical Kerala style architecture. The palace have been constructed in the architectural style of Kerala with gabled roof, small corridor as well as dormer windows, near the Krishnaswamy Temple at Krishnapuram towards the left on the National Highway between Ochira and Kayamkulam.
The Krishnapuram Palace contains the exhibits belonging to the then Travancore Maharaja Marthanda Varma. The palace also features a large pond within the palace complex. It is believed that there is an underground escape route that passes from the bottom of the pond. This escape route was created to flee away from enemies.
The palace complex that currently features as an archaeological museum is really a treasure house of antique paintings as well as inscriptions, coins, megalithic remains, artifacts made from wood, brass as well as stone sculptures. The outstanding displays inside the palace include the mural of Gajendra Moksham, Kayamkulam Val (sword), Buddha's statue of 10th century along with traditional utensils and several other artifacts.
A main attraction of among the displays at the Krishnapuram Palace is a mural depicting the story of Gajendra Moksham (salvation of elephant). This mural dates back to 18th century. Gajendra Moksham is one of the largest single pieces of mural painting in Kerala and is a superb mixture of colors and expression. The theme of this mural is legendary and depicts an elephant saluting Lord Vishnu in devotion with the many secondary gods; goddesses as well as saints look on. Lord Vishnu was the family deity of the Kayamkulam Kings.
The Kayamkulam Val ('Val' literally means "sword") is another important exhibit of the museum. The importance of this sword is that the both sides of the sword are sharpened and therefore it can be more dangerous than some other martial weapon. It is believed that it had been used by the Kayamkulam Rajas during the 18th century and for this reason it was a special attraction for the king.
