Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum is one of the important tourist attractions of Thiruvananthapuram. The official name of this museum is Puthen Malika Palace. The Kuthiramalika Palace Museum was constructed by Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma and it is located south-eastern side of Padmanabhaswamy temple facing towards the Padmatheertham, the Holy Tank of the temple.

Kuthiramalika Palace MuseumKuthiramalika Palace gets its name from the 122 horses which have been carved into the wooden wall brackets that support the southern roof.

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum is really a beautiful example of traditional Kerala architecture, for its typical slanting roofs, overhanging roof space, pillared verandahs as well as enclosed courtyards. Complicated carvings decorate the wooden ceilings with each room with a unique design.

A portion of Kuthira Malika has been transformed to a Palace Museum which houses many of the belongings owned by the Travancore Royal Family. The belongings consist of Kathakali mannequins, Belgian mirrors, crystal chandeliers, paintings, weapons, musical devices, traditional furniture as well as many artifacts. Towards the right side of mannequins are the ivory cradles of different sizes. The palace exhibit two royal thrones, one crafted from ivory and another of Bohemian crystal using the Tranvancore emblem 'conch' designed the top of backrest. The palace also has a huge collection of images as well as sculptures made out of white marble.

At the first floor are place to stay that some time ago used like the spectators chamber, the library as well as an alcove that Swathi Thirunal used for meditating and for conceiving most of his popular musical compositions. The location provides a straight view of the Gopuram (entrance tower) of Padmanabhaswamy temple. There is a portrait of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, painted by Svetoslav Roerich in one of the rooms. The face as well as the footwear of the king looks as if facing the viewer from every corner of room.
